British director and german conductor behind
Opera på Skäret´s staging of Don Carlo

Two international returnees assume the principal responsibility for the production of Don Carlo at Opera på Skäret in the summer 2018 – British director William Relton and German conductor Michael Balke.
“William Relton is an extremely skilled personal instructor in musical drama, which is what is needed to master a work like Don Carlo. Michael Balke has successfully directed Don Carlo in Magdeburg, which carries considerable weight in our very brief rehearsal process,” says Alexander Niclasson, Artistic Director.

Director William Relton achieved great success with Othello at Opera på Skäret in 2014. He has now been selected to lead the Opera house’s largest and most demanding production to date.

“William Relton is a director who loves Don Carlo as a piece and has a genuine interest in its complexity and genius. He has an incredible capacity for penetrating the tiniest elements of a piece and, with the score as his guide, embodying the work, doing the composer and librettist justice,” says Alexander Niclasson.

michaelbalkeConductor Michael Balke received great praise for how he led the Swedish Chamber Orchestra in the production of Richard Wagner’s Flying Dutchman in 2016.

“Michael Balke is a conductor with great technical knowledge and a thorough understanding of the entire musical drama process. He is also a highly inspiring individual with the ability to get artists and musicians to shine and perform at their very best. And for those of us who will be rehearsing the opera with two teams of singers over just five weeks, his previous experience directing the piece is indispensable,” says Alexander Niclasson.

William Relton began his career as an actor but has, for the past 25 years, been devoted to directing opera around Europe. He is well acquainted with Sweden and has directed at Drottningholms Slottsteater, Läckö Slottsteater and Vadstena-Akademien, in addition to Opera på Skäret. He has also devoted much of his time to teaching, including at the opera academies in Stockholm and Gothenburg.

Michael Balke has many years of experience as a conductor at the Magdeburg Opera, where he has directed a large number of operas. He is often guest conductor at other opera houses and has achieved great success with The Merry Widow and Madame Butterfly in Tokyo. In recent years, he has also conducted concerts in Copenhagen, Aarhus, St Gallen and Palermo, among other locations.

William Relton’s staging of Othello and The Flying Dutchman with Michael Balke as conductor was uniformly praised by the critics:
