Verdi´s Don Carlo the next challenge at Opera på Skäret

Opera på Skäret presents Don Carlo. Giuseppe Verdi’s magnificent opera about power games and love in a royal environment will form the central piece at Opera på Skäret’s 15th anniversary in the summer of 2018.
“Of all of Verdi’s operas, I hold Don Carlo in the highest esteem. I’m already thrilled to imagine how Verdi’s wonderful music will resound in the fine acoustics of our opera house,” says Alexander Niclasson, the new artistic director at Opera på Skäret.

Don Carlo is a three-way drama of unrequited love in the Spanish royal court in the mid-16th century. For political reasons Don Carlos’ beloved Elisabeth is forced to marry King Philip, Don Carlos’ father. The ensuing struggle for power has the king condemning his son to death. The libretto by Joseph Méry and Camille du Locle is based on a drama by Friedrich Schiller.

“This is a multifaceted relationship drama that, in one breath, deals with the intimate sphere and, in the next, large scale political conflicts of life and death. Don Carlo is pervaded by genius and represents a great challenge for all involved,” said Alexander Niclasson.

Since its inception in 2004, Opera på Skäret has expanded to become Sweden’s leading summer opera. Next year will be the 15th summer that Opera på Skäret will offer top-class opera in the unique opera house on the shore of Lake Ljusnaren outside Kopparberg in the Swedish region of Bergslagen.

Don Carlo will be the fifth opera by Verdi to be performed at Opera på Skäret – the previous pieces having been La Traviata (2005 and 2015), Rigoletto (2006,) Aida (2007) and Otello (2014).

As always at Opera på Skäret, the opera will be performed in the original language, Italian, with Swedish captioning. Don Carlo will be performed between July 28 and August 26.
